Summer Mushroom Hunting in Connecticut

Summer Mushroom Hunting in Connecticut

Registration is required.  Please register here.

There are many types of mushrooms in our region.  Some are poisonous, but their ecology is fun to learn about...and others are simply delicious!  Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt, New England's leading mushroom hunting teachers, will lead us into the forest for a close look at local fungi in their natural habitats.  They will explain the basics of mushroom science and safety, demonstrate helpful collecting tools and wild mushroom photography, and put special emphasis on the summer species that are considered "safe for beginners" to cook with.  This class will show you inside a whole world of adventure that most people overlook.

Recommended for adults and mature kids.  A waiver is required for all participants.  Copies will be available prior to the hike. Participants should bring cameras, or phones (ringers off please).

Location:  Avery Farm Nature Preserve, Ledyard.  We will meet at the entrance off of 184.  Take a left on Flanders Road (at Colonial Tire) and drive to the end of that road which becomes a dirt road and then to the parking area. The hiking will not be difficult, but don't wear your best pants and shoes.

About the Instructors:  Ryan T. Bouchard is the author and photographer of the influential book Gourmet Mushrooms of the Northeast (2019).  Emily Bouchard also studies our local mushroom species (and wild plants as well), and invents new ways to use these special ingredients creatively.  Together, Ryan and Emily Bouchard established The Mushroom Hunting Foundation.

Co-sponsored by the Waterford Public, Groton Public, Public Library of New London, Stonington Free Library, Wheeler Library of North Stonington, Bill Memorial and the Otis Library of Norwich!
