The Declaration of Independence and the American Literary Tradition In-Person
The Declaration of Independence is no doubt the most famous of all American documents. The conventional view emphasizes its roots in Enlightenment principles. This lecture explores additional cultural and historical influences that shaped the document, from early American traditions to enduring narrative frameworks. It will examine what it means for a document to function as a “declaration,” where this one succeeds and falls short, and how it draws on broader storytelling patterns to strengthen its message.
